Inspiriert von einem seiner Schüler und seiner späteren Frau, komponierte Ottorino Respighi 1922 Vetrate di Chiesa (Die Kirchenfenster). Diese viersätzige Symphonische Suite basiert auf gregorianischen Melodien. Es ist eine typische Respighi-Komposition mit all seinen charakteristischen Farben, extremer Dynamik und schönen Melodien. San Michel Arcangelo ist der zweite Satz der Suite: Die tumultartige Musik suggerierte 'einen Kampf der Waffen - eine Schlacht am Himmel' und so erhielt sie den Titel 'Erzengel des heiligen Michael', der der Offenbarung des heiligen Johannes entnommen war.
