Die Fantasie-Ouvertüre Romeo und Julia, komponiert im Herbst 1869, war Tschaikowskys erstes orchestrales Meisterwerk. Er war erst neunundzwanzig Jahre alt und noch stark von Mili Balakirew (1837-1910) beeinflusst, der ihm vorgeschlagen hatte, eine Ouvertüre auf der Grundlage von Shakespeares Stück zu komponieren. Tschaikowsky vollendete die Partitur in wenigen Monaten und beschrieb das Werk als eine Fantasie-Ouvertüre, in der der Konflikt zwischen den Montagues und Capulets mit den lyrischen Themen der schicksalhaften Liebenden kontrastiert wird.
