Seit 1959 ist Niehaus vor allem als Komponist für das Fernsehen und für das Schauspiel tätig. Aus der Reihe seiner Filmmusik-Kompositionen sind "Tightrope", "City Head", "Sesame Street Presents Follow That Bird", "Heartbreak Ridge" und "Bird" (über Charlie Parker) zu nennen.
