Funeral March of a Marionette was composed in 1872 as part of Charles Gonouds Suite Burlesque for piano. This suite was intended as a parody of the music critic, Henry Chorley. When he had finished composing the piece, Gonoud decided to keep only the funeral march. This march has been recorded countless times, one of the first being with John Philip Sousas famous band. The piece is most well known from its use as the theme music to the television program Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
