Sanctuary was composed for H. Robert Reynolds as a symbol of enduring friendship. The work was commissioned by the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association and received its premiere performance by the University of Michigan Symphony Band. Mr. Reynolds conducted the University of Michigan Band for 26 years. The horn is used as the 'main musical messenger' because Reynolds was a horn player. The main motive of Sanctuary is derived from the letters of Mr. Reynolds first name - Harrah.
