1897) was an organist, a conductor and later also teacher at the Conservatory of music of the 'Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde' in Vienna. The Graduale is part of the Roman Catholic liturgy: the vocal soloist sings a psalm or part of a psalm and the audience answers by singing the chorus 'Responsorium' (a kind of answer). The pastoral text is clearly related to the Christmas story. Krenn has written this piece for one male voice, choir and string accompaniment. This version can be performed with singers and orchestra, without singing or with a mixed instrumentation. The solo male voice can also be performed by a tenor instrument. The four-part score for mixed choir has been arranged for wind ensemble (at least a quartet). The original score for strings has been arranged for large wind orchestra, but thanks to the cue notes the piece can also be performed by smaller ensembles in a most satisfactory way. The numerous instrumentation possibilities are clearly indicated in the instrumentation list and range from a wind quartet to a full band. The percussion parts are ad libitum'.

Le Graduale fait partie de la liturgie catholique: le chanteur soliste chante un psaume ou une partie d'un psaume et l'assistance répond en chantant le refrain (« Responsorium »). Le texte à caractère pastoral a un rapport évident avec l'histoire de la naissance du Christ. Krenn a écrit cette pièce pour voix d'homme, chur et accompagnement de cordes. La présente version peut être interprétée soit avec chant et orchestre, soit sans chant ou par un ensemble varié. La partie vocale masculine solo peut également être interprétée par un instrument ténor. La partie à quatre voix pour chur mixte a été arrangée pour ensemble d'instruments à vent (à partir d'un quatuor). La partie de cordes d'origine a été transcrite pour grand orchestre à vents.Grâce aux petites notes, la pièce peut également être jouée par de plus petits orchestres tout en sonnant bien. Les différentes compositions instrumentales possibles sont bien indiquées dans les listes d'instrumentation allant qu quatuor à vent à l'orchestre à vents complet. Toutes les parties de percussion sont ad libitum'.

De pastorale tekst heeft duidelijk betrekking op het kerstverhaal. Krenn heeft dit werk voor één mannenstem, koor en strijkerbegeleiding geschreven. Deze uitgave kan met zang en orkest, zonder zang of met een gemengde bezetting uitgevoerd worden. De mannelijke solozangpartij kan ook door een tenorinstrument vertolkt worden. De vierstemmige partij voor gemengd koor is voor blazersensemble (vanaf een kwartet) bewerkt. De originele strijkerpartij is voor groot blaasorkest bewerkt. Dankzij de invulnoten kan het werk ook door kleinere orkesten goed klinkend uitgevoerd worden. De veelvuldige bezettingsmogelijkheden zijn duidelijk weergegeven in de instrumentatielijsten van het blazerskwartet en van het orkest. Het gehele slagwerk is ad libitum'.
