Gabriele or Pietro Leone (also called Leone of Naples) was born in the first half of the 18th century in Naples and died in Paris after 1789. We do not know much about his life. As a fact, he gave a spectacular concert in London in 1762 after which he was praised 'mandolin virtuoso' by the press. Moreover, he wrote a method for the mandolin, published in Paris in 1770, which helped to a great extent in making this instrument popular. The edition presented here is based on the manuscript in the library of the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan.

Gabriele ou Pietro Leone (connu aussi comme Leone de Naples) naquit à Naples dans la première moitié du 18ème siècle et mourut après 1789 à Paris. Peu est connu de sa vie. On sait qu'il donna un concert spectaculaire en 1762 à Londres à la suite duquel les journaux le célébraient comme virtuose sur la mandoline. En outre il est auteur d'une méthode pour mandoline qui parut en 1770 à Paris et qui contribuait considérablement à la popularité de l'instrument. L'édition présente se base sur le manuscrit qui se trouve à la Bibliothèque du Conservatoire Giuseppe Verdi de Milan.
