A Time There Was, was composed after being commissioned by the Trumpet Corps of the Royal Dutch Military Police. The piece is chorale like in character and was initially intended for memorial like concerts. It is also suitable as a quiet interlude in your concert. At the end of the piece the opening of the Dutch hymn Hours, Days, Months, Years is quoted, referring to the transient nature of existence.

De compositie heeft een koraalmatig karakter en is in eerste instantie bestemd voor het opluisteren van herdenkingen of als rustpunt in een concert. Aan het slot wordt de opening van het kerklied uren, dagen, maanden, jaren geciteerd, refererend aan de vergankelijkheid van het bestaan.
