Fest-Ouverture op. 29 (=op. 26) Hugo Alfvén / Arr. Gunnar Johansson
Festival Overture for large military band
Program Notes
Alfven composed two works for band. Fest-Ouverture and a funeral march for Hjalmar Branting.
Unfortunately there is a very little known about his Fest-Ouverture. Even the opus number is uncertain. Some believe it to be opus 26; others think that it is opus 29. The original score is dated June 2. 1909. The work is in a quasi-sonata form featuring a slow fanfare-like introduction and a brief but rousing coda. Noted trombonist and conductor Christian Lindberg has written a little about the work.
Early on, Alfven fell in love with the Italian-style wind orchestra. During his travels in Italy he was fascinated by the virtuosity shown by the musicians, and often went to listen to concerts with such bands. In his memoirs there are several enthusiastic descriptions of how he experienced the characters of various groups of instruments - and it was after one such occasion, in 1909, that he decided to compose the joyous and triumphant Fest-Ouverture for large "Military band", as he called this type of orchestra. Many of the instruments which were used in the Italian music corps are hardly played today.
