A Breathless Gnu Kiss

A Breathless Gnu Kiss Idar Torskangerpoll

The piece was commisioned by Langhus Brass and had its premier performance at the Norwegian Nationals 2007. Langhus Brass won their section in this competition with this work.

The thematic material/idea is derived from this row of tones: A-G-B-Eflat-Bflat-A-Eflat-Eflat. In Norwegian we spell the notation a little bit different: For us its A-G-H-Ess-BA-Ess-Ess, And this are the tones in lAnGHuS BrASS. This row is used both horisontally and vertically throughout the piece, as a whole or in fragments.

The piece is built as a traditional brass band suite with 3 contrasting movements.

1st movement: This is a "humoreske" dance with videly used polyrythmic elements.

2nd movement: This is a meditative variation of the thematic material, with many soloistic and chambermusical elements

3rd movement: This movement is highly rhythmical and is largely built around the basses as a rhythmic "drone". There are also "humoresque" elements along with a large "fugato" centre section. The piece ends with a long crescendo towards an unison close.

By the way, the title is in no way a reference to a Safari, it is simply an anagram.
