Die Weihnachtsfantasie Hymns and Carols basiert auf einigen eher unbekannten Weihnachtsliedern: drei englische Carols, ein Fragment aus dem gregorianischen Antiphon Salve regina und ein russisches Weihnachtslied, das in England unter dem Namen Carol of the Bells bekannt ist. Charakteristisch für dieses letzte Lied, das zur Begrüßung des neuen Jahrs gesungen wird, ist ein sich stets wiederholendes Motiv, das das Glockengeläut darstellen soll. Die englischen Lieder haben einen eher verhaltenen Charakter und sorgen in dieser Fantasie für die eher lyrischen Momente. In Stimmführung und Harmonisierung sind die Lieder etwas außergewöhnlich gestaltet. Das Stück endet majestätisch
unter Rückgriff auf den der heiligen Maria gewidmeten Hymnus Salve regina.

In 1990 Jochem Slothouwer composed Hymns and Cances II. This work for symphonic band and harp (ad libitum) is based on Hymns and Dances I for piano, mixed choir and percussion. The compostition is based on the contrast between hymnlike melodies and dance music episodes. The work, in five connected parts, seems to look for a reconciliation of both melodic and rythmical elements. The initial theme with the horns and the answer of the band form the base of the first part.The second part, charcterized by a vitorous dance rhythm, is dominated by the percussionn and syncopated motifs with the brass. A melody with the euphoniums almost imperceptibly slips into the ensemble and gradually gets to the foreground. The dance and the hymn reach a real climax interrupted by a short and dark intermezzo (part three). The clear sonority of part four, a fiery tarantella with many small byt virtuoso solos, is a new contras. The final adagio reuses the previously developed ideas of part one and ends in sheer ecstasy.

En 1990 Jochem Slothouwer compose Hymns and Dances II. Cette oeuvre pour grand orchestre d'harmonie et harpe (ad libitum) est basée sur Hymns and Dances I pour piano, chorale mixte et percussion. L'oeuvre est basée sur le contraste entre de mélodies à caractère d'hymne, et de épisodes de musique de danse.Ce contraste cherche des solutions conciliatrices. La composition comprend cinq parties, qui se touchent.La thème que l'on entend en début de l'oeuvre chez les cors et la réponse de l'orchestre forment la base de la première partie.La deuxième partie, qui se caractérise par un rythme de de danse vioureux, est dominèe par la percussion et des motifs syncopés chez les cuivres; à ceci s'ajoute sournoisement une mélodie chez les tubas, qui se manifeste lentement mais sûrement.La danse et l'hymne atteignent un paroxysme, qui est interrompu par un court et sombre intermezzo (la troisième partie). La sonorité claire de la quatrième partie forme à nouveau un contraste; il s'agit d'une tarentelle fougueuse avec de nombreux petits solos virtuoses. Le final , un adagio, reprend le fil de idées développées dans la première partie et se termine en s éxtasiant.

In Hymns and Dances II voor groot harmonieorkest en harp (ad libitum) bouwt Jochem Slothouwer voort op Hymns and Dances I voor piano solo, gemengd koor en slagwerk: de basis wordt gevormd door de tegenstelling tussen hymnische melodieën en dansante episoden, een tegenstelling die naar oplossingen zoekt. Het is een vijfdelige compositie, waarvan de delen zonder onderbreking in elkaar overgaan.Het hoornmotief waarmee het werk opent en het antwoord (dalend kwartmotief) in het orkest vormen de basis van het eerste deel. Deel 2, in krachtig dansritme, wordt beheerst door het slagwerk en syncopische motieven in het koper, waarbij zich ongemerkt een melodie voegt (euphonium) die langzamerhand steeds meer op de voorgrond treedt. Dans en hymne zorgen samen voor een climax, die wordt afgebroken door een kort intermezzo (deel 3). De donkere kleur van het beginmotief contrasteert me de heldere klank van deel 4, een felle tarantella met vele korte virtuoze solo's, die opzwepend naar een hoogtepunt leidt. Het slotdeel, adagio, neemt de draad van het eerste deel weer op en brengt het werk tot een extatisch slot.
