Svendsen wrote his three Norwegian rhapsodies between 1876 and 1877. All of them are largely based on themes from a collection og songs (Ældre og nyere norske Fjeldmelodier by L.M. Lundeman.
Norwegian Rhapsody no. 3 begin with two dances which eventually merge into a slower part based on a Norwegian folk tune named Aasmund Fregdegjævar. The rhapsody ends with to merry folk songs. The rhapsody is dedicated another great Norwegian composer; Edvard Grieg.
Johan Svendsen was a master of orchestration and this transcriptions tries, as far as possible, to take care of his rich orchestral palette.

[NO]Svendsen skrev sine fire norske rapsodier i årene 1876 til 1877 og de bygger i stor grad på temaer fra L.M.Lindemans Ældre og nyere norske Fjeldmelodier. Nr. 3 åpner med to springdanser som etter hvert glir over i den langsomme mellomdelen bygget på folkevisen Aasmund Fregdegjævar. Rapsodien avsluttes med de to lystige folkevisene Ho Guro og Aa Lendsman han ha' no ei graaskjimra Mær. Denne rapsodien er for øvrig tilegnet Edvard Grieg.
Svendsen var en orkestreringens mester og transkripsjonen prøver i størst mulig grad å ta vare på hans rike orkesterpalett."
