The Christmas Oratorio was produced as a whole in 1734, but was certainly written by 1733 to celebrate the Festival of Christmas. It is the jubilation that streams from the open heart at the moment when neighborly love is most rife among Christian men. The majestic flourish of drums and trumpets is eminently grand in its effect. The idea of joy is here to be expressed, and its expression is in the most sonorous and brilliant tones.
Add this refined concert work to your holiday program and you'll add a real touch of class to the evening! Bach's Christmas Oratorio, originally for choir and orchestra, is an ambitious work that, with Frank Erickson's skillful scoring, becomes a jubilant display of concert band sonorities. Arranged in three contrasting movements, the second employs the neat effect of pitting a brass choir playing a chorale melody against a woodwind choir playing the obbligato melody. The third movement, with majestic flourishes of trumpets and timpani, brings this grand Baroque work to a glorious close!
