Bach arranged quite a lot of both his own music and that of others for all kind of instrumental combinations. Sometimes he also used the same tunes in several of his works. This 'Berceuse' (Lullaby) is not only known as an air from the famous 'Christmas Oratorio' (Weihnachtsoratorium), but is also a part of the cantata 'Laßt uns Sorgen, laßt uns wachen'. Despite the abundance of notes, the lullaby character is apparent.

Jean Sébastien Bach a beaucoup arrangé sa propre muique et celle des autres pour toutes les combinaisons possibles d'instruments. Parfois, il utilisait les mêmes thèmes dans différentes oeuvres. Ceci est le cas pour cette 'Berceuse', extraite de l'Oratoire de Noël (Weihnachtsoratorium), que l'on retrouve également dans sa cantate 'Laßt uns sorgen, laßt uns wachen' (Prenons soin de tout et veillons). Malgré l'abondance de notes, le compositeur a bien pu évoquer le caractère d'une berceuse.

Johann Sebastian Bach bewerkte veel van zijn eigen muziek en ook van andere componisten voor alle mogelijke bezettingen. Vaak gebruikte hij ook dezelfde muziek in meerdere van zijn werken.Zo is deze 'Berceuse' (wiegelied) niet alleen bekend uit het beroemde 'Weihnachtsoratorium', maar komt ze ook voor als aria in de cantate 'Laßt uns sorgen, laßt uns wachen'. Ondanks het vrij drukke notenbeeld is de sfeer van het wiegelied heel goed bewaard.
