Das Perpetuum mobile wurde von Johann Strauß als rein symphonisches Werk konzipiert. Über einem ostinaten Bassgerüst entfalten sich zahlreiche Variationen. Der Scherz besteht nun darin, dass das Werk entweder endlos wiederholt oder durch ein Decrescendo ausgeblendet werden kann. Die Bearbeitung von Arndt Mehring erlaubt eine Ausführung der originalen Piccolostellen sowohl mit der großen Flöte als auch mit dem Piccolo. Das Perpetuum ist aufgrund seiner (variablen) Länge auch ein ideales Zugabenstück. Der Schwierigkeitsgrad ist mittel.
