Clouds and shadows (dos trompetas y banda) José Miguel Fayos-Jordán
Inspired by the cycle of works entitled "L'Empire des lumières" by René Magritte, the work develops four basic concepts; the idea of background vs. figure, the idea of contrast, the textures of sound clouds and the idea of sound shadow, generated by linear deviations from one or more sounds.
The sound material is articulated around these main ideas throughout the work. This material is generated from a spectral treatment of the harmony, based on the harmonic spectrum of the solo instruments (trumpet, flugelhorn and piccolo trumpet). These initial harmonic spectra configure the whole sound framework through the application of synthesis and filtering techniques. The resulting harmonic spectra, in turn, maintain a direct correspondence in the organisation of the discourse on a microformal and macroformal level, thus generating the whole architecture of the work, from the genesis of the soloist instruments themselves. This spectral architecture is infiltrated at various times with rhythmic, harmonic and melodic material from outside the spectrum, in order to give the work a greater richness of sound. In this way, starting from very contrasting elements, a hybridisation of materials is generated, resulting in a much richer, more varied and expressive discourse. Thus, in the second movement, through the analogy of deep singing, the spectral harmony intermingles with elements derived from the Saeta, which in turn, generate a new and richer discourse.
