The series Fingerstyle: pop, rock, jazz and Latin for Guitar offers original pieces and arrangements for one or two guitars. In standard notation with extensive fingering and accurate stylistic notes, these volumes should inspire pleasure and passion in new music for guitar. Mercy, Mercy, Mercy' is a jazz piece written by Viennese composer Joe Zawinul for the singer Esther Marrow in 1966. It was a surprise hit in the Billboard Pop Chart when it was first recorded a year later by the Cannonball Adderley Quintet. It's the use of harmonics and guitar effects that make this piece unique. The two-bar intro, which is accompanied by two chords in the original, and the second half of the B-part have been extensively reharmonised. The second guitar accompanies the improvisation with a legato line in the left hand and a continuous percussive guitar figure imitating drums and bass (part E) in the right hand, with all the drumming effects carefully notated. The basics of guitar percussion are explained in detail on page 4. The music includes a suggested solo for guitar 1, based on the improvisation on the recording on the accompanying CD. The main emphasis is the use of double stops, two-part chords, very characteristic of the guitar, which also feature in the melody in part A. In the following video, you can see and hear another improvisation. The ultimate aim, of course, is to play your own improvisation tabs for the chord sequence are given in part E.
