Luigi Cherubini (1760-1842) was one of the leading figures in the musical world of the early nineteenth century, being active as well in Paris, London and Vienna as in his home country Italy. He became the first inspector of the Paris Conservatory of Music where he taught composition from 1816 onwards and was director from 1821 to 1841. Besides his famous 'Requiem in C minor' he wrote some thirty operas, fallen into oblivion except for the overtures, and also several marches for wind band. 'Anacreon' is a ballet-opera in one act written and first performed in 1803. The composition is rather representative for Cherubini's style and boasts several pleasant melodies fitting in a distinct structure. The overture is written in a simple classical style. The introducing largo leads to the central allegro and then the themes are developed in a fascinating way.

Luigi Chérubini (1760-1842) est l'une des figures dominantes dans le monde musical du début du dix-neuvième siècle, étant actif à Paris, Londres et Vienne, tout comme dans son pays natal. Il devient le premier inspecteur du Conservatoire de Paris où il enseigne la composition dès 1816 et dont il est le directeur de 1821 à 1841. Il a composé un célèbre 'Requiem en Ut mineur', une trentaine d'opéras dont seules les ouvertures ont survécu, ainsi que plusieurs marches pour orchestres à vents. 'Anacréon' est un opéra-ballet écrit et créé en 1803. L'uvre est représentative pour le style typique de Chérubini et comprend de nombreuses mélodies fort agréables, le tout ayant une structure claire et nette. L'ouverture est écrite dans un style classique peu compliqué. Un largo en introduction mène vers l'allégro central et les thèmes principaux y sont développés d'une façon fascinante.

Luigi Cherubini (1760-1842) was één van de dominerende figuren in de muziekwereld van het begin van de negentiende eeuw, zowel actief in Parijs, Londen en Wenen als in zijn geboorteland. Hij werd de eerste inspecteur van het Parijse Conservatorium waar hij vanaf 1816 compositie doceerde en van 1821 tot 1841 directeur was. Naast zijn bekende 'Requiem in C klein' schreef hij ook een dertigtal opera's waarvan alleen de ouvertures nog enige bekendheid hebben en o.m. ook diverse marsen voor blaasorkest. 'Anacreon' is een ballet-opera in één bedrijf die in 1803 geschreven en voor het eerst opgevoerd werd. Het werk is wel representatief voor Cherubini's stijl en bevat heel wat aangename melodieën, vervat in een duidelijke structuur. De ouverture is in een ongecompliceerde klassieke stijl geschreven. Een inleidend largo voert naar het centrale allegro, waarna de thema's op muzikaal boeiende wijze worden uitgewerkt.
