For his now famous private performances, King Ludwig II of Bavaria commissioned three historical ballets. The subjects of these ballets were festivities held at the court of the French Kings Louis XIV and Louis XV, during which the respective kings held dances and shepard's games. Ludwig II required in his ballets the strictest adherance to historical exactitude in all details of the plot. The music too was expected to be exactly in the style of the time. The Munich composer Max Zenger (1837-1911) was entrusted with the commission for the composition of the music because he was considered an outstanding connoisseur of older music. Despite of the fact that Zenger stood rather critical towards the music of Richard Wagner the King liked him and named him Royal Bavarian Professor of Music in 1882. This sonata is part of the ballet "Amor and Psyche", played originally by twelve pages, it can be performed both as a violin duet and using section strings. It is of intermediate difficulty and an interesting example of historicist music at the end of the 19th century.

Le roi Louis II de Bavière passa commande de trois ballets historiques pour ses célèbres représentations privées. Ces ballets évoquaient les fêtes données à la cour des rois de France Louis XIV et Louis XV, au cours desquelles danses et pastorales étaient interprétées devant le roi. Louis II exigeait une grande exactitude historique de tous les détails. La musique devait elle aussi correspondre au style de l'époque et reprendre les formes artistiques du XVIIIe siècle qu'il souhaitait remettre à l'honneur. Le compositeur munichois Max Zenger (1837 - 1911) en fut chargé. Il avait la réputation d'être un parfait connaisseur de la musique des siècles passés. Bien qu'il voyait d'un il critique la musique de Wagner, le roi l'appréciait beaucoup et le nomma professeur royal de musique en 1882. La sonata ici présentée provient du ballett "Amor und Psyche" et fut créée de douze pages jouant devant Louis XIV. Elle peut être interprétée par deux violons ou plusieurs instruments groupés par churs. Le degré de difficulté est moyen. La sonata constitue un exemple intéressant de la musique historique de la fin du 19ème siècle.
