ANATOLIA, Op. 93 (1967) (TURKISH RHAPSODY).
Commissioned by Eastern Illinois University, Anatolia is the name of that section east of Asia Minor and includes the greater part of Turkey. The work is a memento of the composer's visit to Turkey in 1960 as American Specialist for the State Department. It is in free sectional form and consists of four sections: Slow, Moderately Fast, Very Slow, and Moderately Fast. The first section is based on original theme; and the second, on a Turkish folk song with the characteristic national rhythm, "zeybek". The zeybek is an irregular subdivided 9/8 into 3/4 + 3/8. The the development of this rhythm, various permutations are utilized, such as: 3/8 + 3/4, 2/4 + 5/8, 9/8, etc. The third section is based on a very melancholy folk song and the fourth, on a composite of three different folk dances. "Anatolia" was first performed in April 1968 by the Eastern Illinois University Band conducted by the composer.
