This is a significant work from a master composer. In four sections (one movement), the first and third ethereal slow sections are variations of common thematic material; similarly, the second and fourth vigorous, hard-driving sections also derive from common material. Sometimes sparsely scored and sometimes with compact ensemble writing, this is solid writing accessible to moderately advanced players.
