This symphonic poem was written at the request of the Portuguese Navy Band on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the ship the N. R. P Sagres of the Portuguese Navy. The composer travelled on the ship during a mission from Lisbon to the Azores, and describes his experiences in this piece. The seasickness, the unsteady walking, the dolphins and whales he saw. And on his return journey the raging seas, storms, high waves and ripping sails. Among the glory of the marines we hear snippets of the march and anthem of the Portuguese Navy.

Ce poème symphonique est écrit à la commande du Portuguese Navy Band pour célébrer le 50ième anniversaire du navire N. R. P. Sagres de la Marine portugaise. Le compositeur a participé à une mission du navire de Lisbonne aux Açores, et il décrit ici cette expérience: le mal de mer, la démarche chancelante, l'apparition des dauphins et des baleines. Et au retour la mer en furie, la tempête, les vagues gigantesques et les voiles déchirées. À la gloire des mariniers on entend aussi des fragments de la marche et de l'hymne de la Marine portugaise.

Dit symphonisch gedicht is geschreven in opdracht van de Portuguese Navy Band om de 50ste verjaardag van het schip de N. R. P. Sagres van de Portugese Marine te vieren. De componist voer mee op een missie van het schip van Lissabon naar De Azoren en beschrijft deze ervaring in dit stuk: de zeeziekte, het wankele lopen, het opduiken van dolfijnen en walvissen. En op de terugweg woeste zee, storm, huizenhoge golven en scheurende zeilen. Ter meerdere glorie van de mariniers horen we ook nog flarden van de mars en anthem van de Portugese marine.
