This Mass has been dedicated to His Holyness Pope John Paul II, to witness Lancens deep and respectful admiration for the Holy Father. The work was composed in 1986 and written for two solo voices: a soprano and a baryton-Martin (high baritone), mixed choir, harp (ad libitum) and symphonic band or organ. It has ten parts: INTROIT

Lancen expressed his views about this Mass as follows: 'The most important aspect of the Mass is the praising of God and the sacrificing to God; that is why I thought it suitable to use both the themes of the Sanctus and the Offertorium in writing the Introïtus. It seemed to me also quite logical that the initial themes of the Kyrie and the Agnus Dei would be rather similar as these are two moments where the priest and the worshippers invoke God. The composition ends with a brilliant Alleluia in which I also briefly quote the theme of the Sanctus.' This Mass was premiered on 27 may 1989 at 'Our Lady's Church' in Maastricht, The Netherlands, as part of the celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of the Roman Catholic Band Federation of the Limburg County. The Bishop Castermans celebrated the Mass, whereas Jan Cober conducted this first performance. The Missa Solemnis is an alternation of meditating, though often impressive, orchestral passages with angelical choral sounds and the pious singing of both soloists. This may not be the type of music we usually expect from Serge Lancen, but nevertheless the composer remains faithful to his own typical style of composition. You can call this work romantic, though it surely is 'contemporary' or, why not, 'from all times'. The instrumentation is varied and extremely rich, mostly due to Lancen's typical use of 'wind band colours'. This Latin Mass suits perfectly well in the tradition of Roman-Catholic Masses that have been written by several great composers.

Au sujet de cette Messe, Maître Lancen a écrit: 'L'aspect le plus important d'une messe est la louange de Dieu et l'offrande à Dieu; c'est pourquoi j'ai utilisé dans l'Introït les thèmes du Sanctus et de l'Offertoire. Par ailleurs, il m'a semblé logique que le début des thèmes du Kyrie et de l'Agnus Dei se ressemblent puisqu'il s'agit des mêmes moments oû l'on invoque Dieu. Je reprends brièvement celui du Sanctus dans l'Alleluia.' L'oeuvre a été créée, le 27 mai 1989, en tant que messe, à l'occasion du jubilé de la Fédération Catholique des Sociétés de Musique du Limbourg Néerlandais, en la Basilique Nötre-Dame de Maastricht, sous la direction de Jan Cober. La Messe Solennelle était célébrée par Monseigneur l'Evêque Castermans. Dans la Missa Solemnis, des pages orchestrales recueillies, voire impressionnantes, alternent avec des sons angéliques des choeurs et le chant pieux des deux solistes. Cette composition sort de l'ordinaire, mais l'auteur ne trahit nullement son style caractéristique. L'oeuvre peut être qualifiée de romantique, ce qui n'empêche pas du tout qu'elle soit également contemporaine, ou mieux encore, 'de tous les temps'. L'orchestration est très riche, Lancen a l'art d'utiliser la richesse des coloris sonores de l'orchestre d'harmonie. Cette Messe latine fait partie des oeuvres qui entrent dans la grande tradition des Messes catholiques des célèbres compositeurs.

Over deze Mis schrijft Lancen: 'Het belangrijkste aspect van de mis is het loven van en offeren aan God en daarom vond ik het gepast om de thema's van Sanctus en Offertorium bij het Introïtus te gebruiken. Verder leek het me logisch dat het begin van de thema's van het Kyrie en Agnus Dei op elkaar zouden gaan lijken aangezien het de twee momenten zijn waarop God aanroepen wordt. Het werk eindigt met een briljant Alleluia waarin ik een kort citaat in het Sanctus verwerkt heb.'Deze mis werd op 27 mei 1989 in de Onze Lieve Vrouw Basiliek in Maastricht voor het eerst opgevoerd tijdens een misviering opgedragen door de bisschop Mgr. Castermans, n.a.v. de vijftigste verjaardag van de RK Limburgse Bond van Muziekgezelschappen. Uitvoerders waren de Koninklijke Harmonie van Thorn, het Gemengd Kerkelijk Zangkoor St.Jozef uit Mariarade-Hoensbroek, het Gemengd Zangkoor Beeker Koorzang Vereniging uit Beek, de sopraan Carla Schroyen en de bariton Har Poels. Het geheel stond onder de leiding van Jan Cober. De Missa Solemnis is een afwisseling van ingetogen, soms indrukwekkende, orkestpassages, met engelachtige koorklanken en piteitsvolle zang van beide solisten. Wellicht is dit niet wat we gewend zijn van Serge Lancen te horen, maar toch blijft hij zijn eigen stijl ook hier trouw. Het werk kan gerust als romantisch bestempeld worden, wat niet belet dat het toch eigentijds of liever 'van alle tijden' is. De instrumentatie is zeer rijk en vooral het typische kleurenpalet van Lancen geeft een speciaal cachet aan de orkestratie. Deze Latijnse mis ligt in de lijn van de grote Rooms-Katholieke Missen die in de loop van de voorbije eeuwen door diverse grote componisten geschreven werden.
