With Wolf-Gang, the British composer Steve Martland, ironizingly, follows the 18-century tradition of wind music ensembles with which underpaid musicians made some money on the side. Martland arranged six arias from Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute and Le Nozze di Figaro for wind octet, adapting them to todays possible playing techniques. By adding cor anglais and soprano saxophone, it was possible to have each aria played by a different combination of instruments so that each aria stands out against the others with regard to the sound. While rearranging the instrumentation, Martland left the musical material of Mozart untouched.

Avec Wolf-Gang, le compositeur britannique Steve Martland s'inscrit ironiquement dans la continuité de la tradition largement répandue au XVIIIe siècle des harmonies (ensembles d'instruments à vents employés par des aristocrates), grâce auxquelles les musiciens sous-payés gagnaient un peu d'argent. À partir de Don Giovanni, La Flûte enchantée et Les Noces de Figaro, Martland a composé six arias pour octuor à vent et les a adaptées aux techniques de jeu contemporaines. Grâce à l'ajout d'un cor anglais et d'un saxophone soprano, il devient possible de jouer chaque aria avec une combination d'instruments différente, qui se différencie des autres d'un point de vue sonore. Martland a retravaillé l'instrumentation de manière à laisser le matériau musical de Mozart intact.
