With the composition Stadt, Land, Fluss the Upper Austrian composer Thomas Asanger takes us
on an exciting journey along the river Aist, which runs through the market town of Schwertberg
(Austria). A pentatonic melody, which is heard at the beginning, symbolizes the river and is used
throughout the composition. The starting point of the journey is the so-called Josefsthal'. Other
landmarks include Schwertberg, the market square with ecclesiastical and secular festivals, parks
and residential areas, the public music school, and businesses in the village. The market town of
Schwertberg combines urban and rural flair with a variety of educational, professional,
residential, and leisure opportunities for its more than 5,000 residents, making it an important
center of life for the area. Stadt, Land Fluss was commissioned by the Musikverein Schwertberg
in 2018 for the occasion of its 150th anniversary. It was premiered at the Volksheim Schwertberg
on November 10, 2018.
Program note: At bar 117, a small ensemble plays a traditional march/polka during the chorale
played by the woodwind players. As soon as the chorale is finished, the small ensemble continues
and is soon accompanied by aleatoric pitches from the rest of the band. Eventually a fortissimo
cluster gets the upper hand and the ensemble disappears into the rhythmic finale.

Avec la composition « Stadt, Land, Fluss », le compositeur de Haute-Autriche Thomas Asanger
entame un voyage passionnant le long de la rivière « Aist », qui traverse le bourg de
Schwertberg. Une ligne mélodique pentatonique, qui sonne dès le début, sert de promenade et
apparaît encore et encore à mesure que la composition progresse et symbolise le fleuve. Le point
de départ du voyage musical est le « Josefsthal ». Toutes les autres stations sont également
situées le long de la rivière : Schwertberg, la place du marché avec ses festivals ecclésiastiques
et profanes, ses parcs et quartiers résidentiels, l'école de musique publique et les commerces du
village. Schwertberg, ville de marché, combine le charme urbain et rural avec une variété
d'opportunités éducatives, professionnelles, résidentielles et de loisirs pour ses plus de 5 000
habitants et résidents, ce qui en fait un important centre de vie pour ses habitants. La composition
« Stadt, Land Fluss » a été commandée par le Musikverein Schwertberg en 2018 à l'occasion de
son 150e anniversaire et créée au « Volksheim Schwertberg » le samedi 10 novembre 2018.
Note de programme : A partir de la mesure 117, un petit ensemble commence à jouer une pièce
traditionnelle (une marche, une polka) pendant que le choral est joué les bois. Dès que le choral
est terminé, l'ensemble continue à jouer pour lui-même et est bientôt accompagné par les sons
librement choisis du reste de l'orchestre, jusqu'à ce qu'un groupe fortissimo prenne le dessus,
l'ensemble disparaît à nouveau complètement dans le mouvement rythmique final.

Met de compositie Stadt, Land, Fluss begint de Opper-Oostenrijkse componist Thomas Asanger
aan een spannende reis langs de rivier de Aist (Oostenrijk), die door de marktstad Schwertberg
loopt. Een pentatonische melodielijn, die direct aan het begin klinkt, wordt als een promenade
gebruikt en verschijnt steeds opnieuw naarmate de compositie vordert en symboliseert de rivier.
Uitgangspunt van de muzikale reis is de zogenaamde Josefsthal. Ook alle andere stations
bevinden zich langs de rivier: Schwertberg, het marktplein met kerkelijke en wereldlijke feesten,
parken en woonwijken, de openbare muziekschool en bedrijven in het dorp. De marktstad
Schwertberg combineert stedelijke en landelijke flair met een verscheidenheid aan onderwijs-,
beroeps-, woon- en vrijetijdsmogelijkheden voor haar meer dan 5.000 inwoners en is daarmee
een belangrijk centrum van het leven voor haar mensen. De compositie Stadt, Land Fluss werd in
2018 in opdracht van de Musikverein Schwertberg' gemaakt ter gelegenheid van de 150ste
verjaardag van haar bestaan en ging op zaterdag 10 november 2018 in première op de
Volksheim Schwertberg'.
Program note: Vanaf maat 117 begint een klein ensemble een traditioneel stuk (een mars of
polka) te spelen tijdens het koraal dat door de houtblazers wordt gespeeld. Zodra het koraal
wegvalt, blijft het ensemble voor zichzelf spelen en wordt het al snel begeleid door de vrij
gekozen tonen van de rest van het orkest, tot een fortissimo-cluster de overhand krijgt. Dan
verdwijnt het ensemble weer volledig waarna het eindigt met een ritmische slotdeel.
