Pilgrims' Progress

Pilgrims' Progress Thomas C. Duffy

In true and enjoyable "Duffy" style, the players of this work come as close as possible to experiencing, musically, the industrial and social growth of the area around Providence, RI. Each movement chronicles historical development incorporating hymn influences, rhythmic drumming, barn dances, and chants of native Americans, among other elements. Performers use their instruments and voices in ways that serve the overall, bigger picture of the music's intent. A stirring and worthwhile work.
This title uses some contemporary sounds. The band must sing some parts as well as clap hands. Many percussion instruments are needed. It is composed in two movements. The first movement has no key signature, and is in 4/4 meter. The second movement starts with no key signature, goes to the key of G and then returns to no key signature. The meter changes back and forth between 3/4 and 2/4.
