*Oranienbaum bei St. Petersburg, 5. (17.) Juni 1882, +New York, 6. April 1971. Er wird zu den Klassikern der Moderne gerechnet, und ebenso wie die mit dem gleichen Prädikat bezeichneten Paul Hindemith, Béla Bartók und Arnold Schönberg hat er die Blasmusik aus seinem kompositorischen Schaffen nicht ausgeklammert. 1917 entstand "Chants des Bateliers du Volga" für Blasorchester; 1921 "Symphonies d`instruments á vent. In Memoriam Claude Debussy" (Besetzung: 3 Flöten, 2 Oboen, Englischhorn, 3 Klarinetten, 2 Fagotte, Kontrafagott, 4 Hörner, 3 Trompeten, 3 Posaunen, Tuba), wobei man weniger an eine Symphonie im üblichen Sinn denn an Klangbilder denken mag, die aus den verschiedenen Charakteren der Blasinstrumente gewonnen sind. Das Werk schockierte die Zeitgenossen, und es ist auch heute noch in seiner polytonalen Anlage, den metrischen und spieltechnischen Schwierigkeiten nur begrenzt aufführbar. Weitere Bläserwerke Strawinskys sind: "Concerto" für Klavier und Bläser, 1924; "Circus Polka" für Blasorchester (komponiert für einen jungen Elefanten), 1942, Fassung für Orchester 1944; "Scherzo á la Russe" für Blasorchester, 1944.
