Cornelis / Cornelius / llano (Kees) Vlak wurde am 30. September 1938 in Amsterdam geboren. Mit der Musik kam er schon früh in Berührung und erhielt bereits im Alter von acht Jahren ersten Klavierunterricht. Später, von seinem Vater beeinflußt, spielte er Trompete im Fanfareorchester Waterland. Anschließend studierte er am Amsterdamer Konservatorium Klavier und Trompete (Diplome 1959 bzw.1961) sowie Komposition und Dirigieren am Musiklyzeum Amsterdam.

Das Geld für sein Studium verdiente er sich als Trompeter in Tanz-, Unterhaltungs-, Rundfunk- und Sinfonieorchestern. Gleichzeitig arbeitete er eine Zeitlang als Kopist für die Sendeanstalt NOS und erwarb sich bei dieser Tätigkeit die erforderliche Erfahrung als Arrangeur und Komponist. Aus Gesundheitsgründen mußte er schon mit 26 Jahren das Trompetenspiel aufgeben. Seit 1967 bis zu seiner Zurruhesetzung im Jahre 1998 war er daher überwiegend als Dozent für Klavier tätig.

Seit 1966 wandte sich Kees Vlak auch dem Blasorchester zu. Aus diesem Grunde erlernte er auch noch Klarinette und Kontrabaß, um mit der Technik von Holzblas- und Streichinstrumenten vertraut zu werden. Sein Schaffen umfaßt neben unterhaltender natürlich auch die sinfonische Blasmusik, wobei seine Instrumentalkonzerte besonders herauszustellen sind. Als Komponist erhielt er eine Reihe von Kompositionsaufträgen und Preise für acht seiner Werke.

Kees Vlak ist der Blasmusik naturgemäß auch aktiv verbunden als Dirigent verschiedener Blasorchester, Leiter von Seminaren sowie als Wertungsrichter bei nationalen und internationalen Wettbewerben.

Seit 1990 arbeitet Kees Vlak erfolgreich mit dem Musikverlag RUNDEL zusammen. Eine Reihe von Werken, die seit dieser Zeit entstand, haben sich bei Konzerten, Wettbewerben und anderen Anlässen durchgesetzt und können zurecht einen festen Platz im Repertoire mitteleuropäischer Blasmusik beanspruchen.

Kees Vlak verstarb am 5. Dezember 2014 in Schoorl.
