Matthew Mauro composer
Matthew Mauro (b. 1989) is currently an undergraduate Music Education and Horn Performance major at The Ohio State University. Matt has performed with the Wind Symphony and Ohio State University Marching Band since he began his studies at Ohio State. He has also performed with the Symphony Orchestra. Matt was a participant at the 2010 Eastern Music Festival. As a composer, Matt was commissioned by the New Albany Community Foundation (New Albany, Ohio) to write his most recent piece, Vision of Hope, for the New Albany Plain Local Schools band program. Matthews works have been performed by the New Albany Community Band, University Band and Wind Symphony at Ohio State, and the Heisey Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Russell Mikkelson.
Matthew graduated from Anthony Wayne High School in Whitehouse, Ohio in 2007. Matt was a member of the Toledo Junior and Senior Youth Orchestras for 7 collective years, participated in many state-wide honor ensembles, such as OMEA All-State Orchestra, as well as summer institutes, Interlochen Arts Camp and Boston University's Tanglewood Institute.
Matthew has been playing piano since age 6 and horn since age 9. He has been composing music throughout most of his musical training. By age 10, he had written his first piece for piano, Battle of the Pharaohs, which was published in 2004 by the FJH Music Company. By his freshman year in high school, he had written his first composition for concert band, as well as various other small works for piano and instrumental ensembles. His first published band piece, As They Return, was originally written as an entry in the Frank Ticheli Composition Contest, earned finalist status and was published by the C. L. Barnhouse Company. Although Matthew has not received formal training in composition, he has learned music theory and compositional techniques throughout all his musical studies, especially from his pre-college piano instructor, Luke Bartolomeo.
