Milburn E. Carey was born in Marion, INdiana on February 25, 1912, and attended schools there. While in high school he was an oboist and featured English horn solist with the National High School Orchestra in Chicago. He won the National High School Championship in Denver in 1929 snf in Glinz, Michigan in 1930 sd sn oboe solist. He attended the University of Illinois where he received his Bachelor and Master of Music Degrees. He received his Doctorate degree from Columbia University. He was an oboe student with Raymond Dvorak, Andre Andraud and Leo Ruckle. He studied conducting with A. A. Harding and Norval Church, and band arranging with A. A. Harding. He was Director of Bands and then Director of the School of Fine Arts at Phillips University, Enid, Oklahoma over a period of forty six years. He was the Managing Director of the Tri-State Music Festival in Enid from 1935 - 82. He appeared as guest professor at 25 universities. He served as national president of Phi Beta Mu bandmasters fraternity for 23 years. He is a member of the American Bandmasters Association, Pi Kappa Lambda, Beta Theta Pi, and the Lions Club International.
