Paul Hübner arranger
Paul Hübner has studied trumpet with Malte Burba and Mike Svoboda in Mainz and Basel. In 2009/10 he was a fellow in the International Ensemble Modern Academy in Frankfurt.
As an interpreter, performer, composer and improvisor, he is notably devoted to new and experimental music. Paul gives concerts in Germany and abroad, as a soloist and in different ensemble formations, amongst them the Ensemble Modern, BR Symphony Orchestra, oh-Ton-Ensemble, l'art pour l'art, zinc&copper, ensemble phoenix as well as his own formations 3® and mam.manufaktur für aktuelle musik. He appeared at numerous festivals, including Lucerne Festival, Kunstfest Weimar, Münchner Biennale, Festival Rümlingen, Warsaw Autumn, Ultraschall Festival, sounds new, and the Musica Viva Festival in Munich.
In June 2016 he will be the main character Michael in Karlheinz Stockhausen's opera DONNERSTAG aus LICHT in a new staging at Opera Basel.
Paul cooperates closely with composers to contribute to new works for a large body of (brass) instruments, and explores new sounds and forms in his own compositions and improvisations. He has premiered works by Adriana Hölszky, Dmitri Kourliandski, Julio Estrada, Peter Ablinger, Jagoda Szmytka, Michael Maierhof and many others. Recent works include a collaboration with Niklas Seidl on a bigger cycle of joint works with video and electronics (premiered in Frankfurt and during the Lucerne Festival as well as at the Deutschlandfunk Festival in 2014) and several audio installations and music for theatre plays in Germany.
His forthcoming book on extended trumpet techniques will be published by Breitkopf & Härtel this year.
Paul Hübner has won awards in different national and international competitions, amongst them the International Competition for Contemporary Chamber Music in Cracow, the Competition of the German Music Council, the composition competition Ensemblia and the Stockhausen Courses in 2010, 2011 and 2013. He is also a fellow of the ZIRP, a a fellowship program for outstanding young artists.
