Pedro Pires composer
Born in Tavira, Pedro Pires started learning music at the age of 5 at Banda Musical de Tavira. At the age of 8, he had his first contact with the clarinet, having the maestro António Batista as his teacher.
At the age of 11, he joined the Regional Conservatory of the Algarve Maria Campina (CRAMC), in the class of Professor José Veloso. In 2006 he finishes the 8th grade of clarinet at CRAMC with Professor Jennifer Brown, and in the same year he wins the 1st Prize in the Chamber Music Competition, of this same institution. The same year he joins Escola Superior de Música, in Lisbon, in the class of Professor Manuel Jerónimo and, later, with Professor Paulo Gaspar.
He was a clarinet teacher at Banda Musical de Tavira and at Sociedade Filarmónica Incrível Almadense, a member of the Lisbon Youth Symphony Orchestra, and also of the Almada Clarinet Orchestra (OCLA), where he performed as a soloist.
In 2008 he joins the Portuguese Navy Band (Banda da Armada Portuguesa) and, in 2011, he graduates in Music, in the clarinet variant. That same year, he also entered the Jazz course at Escola Superior de Tecnologias e Artes, in Lisbon, in the Class of Professor José Menezes.
In 2015 he begins to study composition and orchestration with conductor Pedro Duarte and he is a regular attendee of seminars in the field of musical composition and artistic creation. As a composer and arranger, he participates in national and international projects. Since 2021 he also studies with the Composer Óscar Navarro.
In 2017 he was awarded at the 1st International Contest of Original Compositions for Musical Bands (Italy) with the work Mare Clausum.
He is currently a musician at the Portuguese Navy Band as a performer on clarinet and piano, and he is also a resident composer. He is also a Professor of clarinet at Sociedade Filarmónica União Assaforense, since 2016.
